About

Life is not what it’s supposed to be. It’s what it is.
The way you cope with it is what makes the difference. ~ Virginia Satir

Carole Stokes-Brewer, PHD, LISW-S, LICDC-CS

I’m Carole Stokes-Brewer and I would love to help you on your journey to feel better, solve problems and reach your potential. With over 40 years of experience, I have a passion to work with individuals to help them move forward in life. My holistic and interactive approach facilitates you in discovering new possibilities, and achieving your goals.

Honestly, when I graduated from college with a degree in Sociology, I had no clue what to do or what direction to go in.

I landed back at Home.  That’s where I always felt needed.  I attended Kent School of Social Work at the University of Louisville, where I achieved my Master’s of Science in Social Work.

I planted my seed and left to work in Cincinnati, OH.  What followed was an array of experiences that helped build my foundation in the helping arena.  I worked in a mental health clinic and a children’s psychiatric clinic.  Then, I developed chemical-abuse services for adolescents, women, and adults.  This work motivated me  to pursue more education.  Hence, the journey of my work in obtaining a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology.

I’ve always been clever with words. (Even though there are times when the word I’m looking for escapes me).  My mother loved to read and still does write poetry.  She use to email me a line for a poem. I would email the next line (we live in different states) back and forth until we came up with a poem.  It was funny to see her laugh until she cried when I would write the unexpected ending.  We still write, but now write haikus together.

It’s interesting how this builds my sense of seeing things differently.  Or, did I see things differently before the artistic writing of poetry?

In some unique ways this comes out in my therapy.  I love to offer a different way of seeing things.  Like the quote by Marcel Proust, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands but seeing with new eyes.”

The video below describes a battle that goes on within each of us and the side that wins is the one we feed.
